What the Sensors Do
Look at the bottom of each vertical track, four to six inches off the slab. There is a small plastic eye on a bracket on each side. One projects an infrared beam across the opening and the other receives it. If anything interrupts that beam while the door is closing, the opener stops and sends the door back up.
This has been a federal requirement on residential garage door openers sold in the United States since 1993, following a run of fatal accidents involving children. Any opener without photo eyes predates that rule and is old enough to be worth replacing outright. The system is not optional and it is not a nuisance feature. It is the part that stops the heaviest moving object in the house from closing on someone.
Because the opener will not close hands-free without a verified beam, anything that upsets the sensors produces the same set of symptoms: the door reverses, or refuses to close at all, or closes only while you hold the wall button down.
Why Sensors Go Out in Waco Garages
Knocks are the leading cause. The brackets sit at shin height right where cars, bikes, trash bins and lawn equipment pass. A light bump rotates the eye a few degrees, which is all it takes to lose alignment across a sixteen-foot opening. Nobody notices the knock. Everybody notices the door.

A staple driven slightly too hard cuts into the insulation, and years of vibration finish the job. Rodents chew them. Damp corrodes the terminals at the motor head. All of it produces an intermittent fault that comes and goes with temperature.
Things Worth Trying Before You Call
A fair proportion of sensor problems take two minutes and cost nothing.
- Look along the beam line and move anything sitting in the opening, including bins, boxes and bicycle wheels.
- Wipe both lenses with a dry soft cloth. Not solvent, which hazes the plastic.
- Check the small indicator light on each sensor. If the receiving one is off or blinking, alignment is the issue.
- Gently rotate the misaligned eye until the light goes steady, then tighten the wing nut on the bracket.
- Look for an obvious pinched or chewed wire along the track.
If the lights stay steady and the door still reverses, the problem has moved on to the travel limits, the down force setting, or something physically resisting the door near the floor. That is where it is worth having someone look.
Do not tape the sensors facing each other on the same bracket. It is a trick that circulates online for forcing a stubborn door to close, and it defeats the reversing system completely. The door will then close on whatever is underneath it, which is the exact outcome the rule exists to prevent.
What the Repair Involves
The sensors are aligned properly first, using the indicator lights rather than by eye, and both brackets are checked for movement. Loose brackets get re-anchored, because an eye that shifts every time the door runs will drift out again within weeks.
The wiring is traced from each sensor back to the terminals on the motor head, looking for staple damage, breaks and corroded connections. Intermittent faults usually live here rather than in the sensor itself, and finding the break is most of the work.
Then the opener settings get checked. Travel limits tell the motor where the floor is, and down force tells it how much resistance to accept before reversing. A door that hits the slab and bounces back has its down limit set too far. A door that stops an inch short has it set too short. Both mimic a sensor fault and both are adjustments, not parts.
Last comes the test that matters. A flat piece of timber is laid across the opening and the door closed onto it. A correctly working door contacts it and immediately reverses. The Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends homeowners run that check once a month, and it takes about fifteen seconds.
When the Sensor Is Not the Problem
A door that reverses can also be a door that is binding. Worn rollers, a slightly misaligned track or a door that is out of balance all create resistance the opener reads as an obstruction. If the sensors check out clean, that is where to look next, and a tune-up usually resolves it.
